Electronics Engineer
I’ve been taking things apart since I could pick up a screwdriver. Then, having trained in electronic engineering and computing, I went on to fixing pro audio gear.
Alongside live gigs and events, I work on bespoke electronic projects in my workshop.
This includes the development of wireless camera tally systems, and various other gadgets to help technicians on live events, such as my BeadleBox that helps with the timing of name calling at graduations.
I make speciality high-quality cables for technicians and musicians that just want something that’s reliable and will last.
So if there’s some sort of device you’ve been thinking “hm, if only I had a…” or if you have a small batch of units that need building up for an install or special event, give me a shout.
This is a modification to a Kawai MP8 that I did for Chris Martin of Coldplay. He needed the sounds of his favourite Kawai piano, but in a much smaller form factor. So I quite literally chopped the ends off the keyboard, and made it into a 49note key action!
I also take on electronic repairs from various production companies that I work for as a technician – and have been known to fix things while actually on the job!
Here’s one of my innovations, The Audio Puck.. It’s a Swiss Army Knife of audio cables… and I quote from it’s launch at Plasa Leeds 2024 – “Every engineer should have one in their Peli”.
It’s pretty much an anything to anything cable – Balanced, UnBalanced, and Stereo/Insert. XLRs, Jack, MiniJacks, RCAs – it’s all there right when you need it. You can even use it as two independent cables at the same time.
As part of a bespoke project for Nigel Wray of Saracens Rugby club, I designed and built an elegant audio playback device to complement the original commentary microphone used by Ian Robertson when Jonny Wilkinson scored that amazing drop goal, winning England the 2003 Rugby World Cup final.
